They are the small movie theaters of my adolescence. The ones where I fell hopelessly in love with cinema.
Some of these cinemas were already in crisis before the pandemic, supplanted by blockbusters. Now they've all been closed for more than a year, and many will never reopen.
In the face of the dramatic impact the pandemic has had on our lives, the sudden and prolonged blackout of cinemas has taken a back seat, overridden by other priorities.
Now these closed cinemas seem to represent that part of our imagination (and our lives) that we have lost forever.
I live in Bologna, Italy.
For many years I have been dedicating myself to street photography which, I believe, can help us understand the reality we are experiencing.
For some time I have been moving away from this genre, to orient myself towards reportage, an “elsewhere” that I would like to make sense.
The work "Border Atlas", as well as the other projects in the pipeline, is, in a certain sense, my “premierè fois” (to quote Magnum's beautiful book).
