Monica waits to have a caesarean in the new operating theatre at Malakal Hospital, South Sudan. In the past, there have been few midwives, nurses and basic medical facilities in the area due to ongoing violence. The Hospital was ransacked during rounds of fighting and, unable to find a functioning health clinic and/or trained medical staff, Monica tragically lost her last 2 babies during childbirth. The operating theatre - a lifeline for the community - has only been open for 6 months and, shortly after this image was taken, Daniella was delivered healthily.
