Yemen’s healthcare service has been “decimated by years of unrelenting war”, according to the ICRC, who say that more than 80 percent of the country’s population lack access to health care services. This series looks at healthcare through the lens of the town of Ataq, in Shabwa province, where people travel for hours to be treated at the overcrowded and basic 240-bed general hospital. But there’s hope ahead; work is underway to finish a new hospital after 27 years of delays, and foreign funding has allowed the opening of a dedicated COVID-19 center.
