Lenten pilgrimages are one of the oldest traditions on the island of São Miguel, in which the belief of faith is revealed. They walk over 300km, always with the sea on the left, passing through the largest possible number of churches of S. Miguel (Azores), walking for eight days, pilgrims make the return to the island praying to Christ. Tradition that originates in the natural disasters that devastated Vila Franca do Campo - on October 22, 1522 and following days. Staff, rosary of tears, scarf, barley and shawl are essential tools of these pilgrims.
