Iquitos, northeastern Peru. City buried in the heart of the Amazon rainforest. City cut off from the world.
It is the largest city in the world inaccessible by land.
The Peruvian road network is 400 km from here.
Belen, on the banks of the Amazon river, is the poorest and most dangerous district of Iquitos.
17,000 people live there.
There are huts on stilts and others on logs floating in the rainy season.
Gay men here do not need to hide their homosexuality, they are accepted by the community.
The family sense is very strong and Christian religion very present.
Manuel, 18, lives with his parents, uncles, aunts and cousins ... .16 members in the same wooden house.
His dream is to win the $ 1,000 first prize of the "Miss Amazonas Gay" contest.
He is rehearsing every day in the alleys of Belen for the big parade and the contest that will take place in September.
French-American, Valerie Leonard travels the world following her theme that she named “Labours of Hercules" where she attempts to show with utmost respect the dignity of women and men living and working in particularly hostile environments.
She takes the time to live with the people and be fully accepted before starting her work.
There is no staging, with patience and respect, she waits for the right moment, the right light to tell the truth, but in terms of beauty.
Far from seeking aesthetic or false compassion she intends to change the way we see a forgotten humanity.
