The Carnival of Venice is one of the most renowned event in the world. The first record
dates back to 1904, to be precise to a document of Doge Vitale Falier.
The establishment of the Carnival is attributed to the need to provide to the population,
especially the most humble walks of life, a period dedicated to the fun and festivities
with music and dances.
The use of masks and costumes guaranteed anonymity, which allowed the leveling social
divisions.
Since 24 years it held the "Ballo del Doge", one of the most famous events and exclusive
of the city, which annually attracts visitors from around the world. Tickets for dinner
and show cost between 800 and 2,500 Euros. The event is organized by Atelier Antonia
Sautter, who also designed the costumes worn by guests.
"Il Ballo del Doge" is inspired by the scene in mask of the movie "Eyes Wide Shut" by
Stanley Kubrick.
Filippo Venturi is an Italian documentary photographer.
His works have been published in different newspapers and magazines such as The Washington Post, Newsweek, Financial Times, Vanity Fair, Der Spiegel, Die Zeit, Das Magazin, Internazionale, La Stampa, Geo, Marie Claire.
He produces personal projects concerning identity and the human condition, focusing in particular on the consequences of rapid technological progress in some parts of the world.
For the past years he has been engaged in a project on the Korean peninsula, earning him the Sony World Photography award.
