Aita

The “Aita” was a Renaissance team sport of military origin, performed in the city of
Urbino for more than two centuries (from XV to XVII century) and usually played in non-war
times. It was played by the Legione Metaurense (that is to say the Duke’s army) and it
represented the only occasion for soldiers of low origin to challenge the gentry ones.
Until recently it was quite difficult to find precise information concerning this sport,
but now the rules are known thanks to the recent finding of a 1939 document in which the
Fascist Podestà of that time proposes to organize “Aita” matches as a symbol of “virile
military training”.
In 2012 the tradition came to life in the first modern edition of the “Aita”, performed by
rugby players from Urbino and the nearby area. Later on the “Aita” was enumerated among
the 15 historical games protected by the Italian State.
