In 1981, the United Nations declared Nov. 25 the International Day
for the Elimination of Violence Against Women. Today, millions of
women continue to be the victims of myriad forms of gender-
based violence.
Accusations of witchcraft are a disturbing example of a lesser-
known form of violence to which women can be subjected daily in
some areas of the world.
In Burkina Faso, where poverty is rampant, accusations of
witchcraft are referred to traditional leaders for decision.
Fati, accused of witchcraft, escaped lynching, but lost sight in the
fire she would have to burn. Now she has found refuge in
Koupela's reception center where, abandoned by her family and
community, she spends her time sitting on the ground of her room
without receiving visits for the past two years. Her story is
primitive and tragic, a ruthless ritual to which none of these
women accused of witchcraft has managed to escape.
