Family Series

  • Photographer
    Andre Maier, United States

The same family - the photographer's own family - photographed
every 6 months since 2000. Each photo is a conceptual image
telling its own story. It started when my wife, also a professional
painter/artist, became pregnant with our first son in 2000. We
created a composition called "The Birth of Art". We have taken
composed a tableau of our growing family every 6 months since,
for a total of 34 images so far.

André lives with his wife (artist Sylvia Maier), their two sons, and two labrador retrievers in Brooklyn NY and Los Angeles. When Sylvia was pregnant with their first son in 2000, they staged a conceptual “family portrait” calling it “Giving Birth to Art”. As a family, they have created a new tableau twice a year ever since. The family series has now become a history of their family and even though the photos are far from reality, the series has become a story and reflection of the 4 family members as a team, as individuals, and as artists.

André Maier grew up in Münster, Germany. The path that led to a thriving career in photography took him not only from country to country, but also from discipline to discipline. From Molecular Biology studies at TU Berlin and King’s College London, he eventually dedicated himself to his passion — photography — at the prestigious London College of Printing. Before long André’s relaxed and creative photojournalism was featured in magazines and he had the opportunity to photograph many extraordinary events and people, including the Dalai Lama.

André takes conceptual portraits as commissions for other families.
