The Nature of Change, (series)

Originally as an offshoot from my Mothers+Daughters project,
this body of work began as a way of looking at the teenage girls
from the same series, but photographed alone. These girls are
photographed in their own home environments, each unique
and familiar to them.

Nature is used metaphorically and reflected into their portraits
to symbolize the constant evolution and transitional stage that
they are in, one of intense growth and maturation and
unfolding. There is also an undercurrent of a bittersweet loss of
innocence.

These portraits and nature reflections are done entirely in
camera and count on a bit of magic to make the process
seamless. This reliance on a sliver of serendipity is not that
dissimilar to the hope that accompanies parenting. Sometimes
the process works, and at other times, despite the best
intentions, it does not.

Rohina Hoffman is an Indian-born American artist whose narrative work focuses on themes of identity, home, and the female experience. Raised in New Jersey but now residing in California, Rohina received her BS in Neuroscience and MD both from Brown University. She also studied photography at the Rhode Island School of Design. After years of practicing as a clinical neurologist, she now focuses on her artistic practice.
She has produced two monographs, Hair Stories (Damiani 2019) and Embrace (Schilt 2023) with solo shows at Brown University and Griffin Museum of Photography, respectively.
