Ghost Lakes

In the central desert of Australia there are thousands of "lakes"
that, for most of the time, are dry. Some may go for as long as a
decade before water flows into them. Most of them are ephemeral.
Many of them are salt lakes. With evaporation and soakage some
of these lakes disappear quickly, as if into thin air. They are
sometimes called "Ghost Lakes" for this reason.

From the air these salt lake beds are like a vast canvas on the land.
Salt, sand and clay are mixed by water and wind currents to form
natural works of art like watercolour paintings.

When these lakes are dry very little life ventures onto them. Wild
camels can cope with the distances and heat, sometimes crossing
lakes that are 50 km wide. Emus are another animal adapted to
use these lakes, searching for insects that blown into them by
strong winds.
