This series is about my daughter in the process of turning into an
young adult she is not really embracing yet.
People always tell me she is 'different' but I cannot seem to point
out what makes her different, even though I feel it as well. Perhaps
a way to understand her more I need to photograph her.
And then in February 2016 her biological dad dies, his own choice.
What do we, as mothers in this complicated world, have to do to
put a strong young person onto this planet. My daughter's
environment has changed rapidly the last year. The (non) existing
presence of terror is as well influencing her small world, and even
more mine. Even though my situation is not in danger nor do I fear
for starvation or evacuation. I have the urge to tell..
Mascha Joustra graduated in May 2015 at the Fotoacademie Amsterdam, specializing in documentary and portrait series. She graduated with a cum laude recommendation on a large series of photographs bundled in a voluminous photo book called ‘Elders’ (‘Elsewhere’) and designed by SYB. In this series she is investigating the differences in culture on the country side in relation to history of religion in the Netherlands.
This photo book has been shortlisted for the ‘Unseen Dummy Award “ in Amsterdam, September 2015 and has been presented during Paris Photo 2015 at the Polycopies event.
