“Parallels” is a project that I did not start consciously. It just slowly
emerged as a theme after years of crisscrossing the globe with a
camera strapped around my neck. In travels, some people are
fascinated by magnificent scenery, others ñ by architecture and
the remains of glorious past, or by local culture. Gradually, I found
myself most excited and happy when I was browsing the streets
and watching people live their lives. Talk, laugh, cuddle, argue,
walk, relax, read, nap... You may call it voyeurism, and you
probably would be right, but is it bad? I genuinely mean no harm
or disrespect to my unsuspecting “victims” when I take with me
moments of their lives in my photos.
Looking through piles of street captures I accumulated over the
last several years, I realized that no matter how far I go and how
different the language, culture, or circumstances of these people
are from my own, I find the situations and emotions are really the
same. People are so similar wherever and however they live, and
this book is a way to share this feeling with my reader. I am sure
you won’t need an interpreter to understand what these people do,
feel, or think. To drive this point home, when putting this book
together I decided to arrange photos in such a way that every two-
page spread has multiple photos captured in different parts of the
world but having something in common - a situation, or mood, or
compositional motif. I hope you will find this both amusing and
thought provoking.
