Dalieh of Raouche is the name of a vast terrain that slopes from
the coastal promenade of Beirut down to the Mediterranean Sea.
For decades, it has been accessible to the public and has been a
popular destination for swimmers, divers, fishermen and people
seeking natural surroundings to escape the noise of the city.
However, as the sprawling city of Beirut continues to grow in an
uncontrolled and rapid pace, this large plot of land is at great risk
of becoming privatized as planning for a private beach resort is
now underway. Today, the land has been purchased by two private
entities, the area has been fenced off (although still accessible)
and in May 2015, fishermen’s decade old dwellings have been
forcefully demolished. This is the last remaining chunk of natural
coast and the city is ready to invade.
