The Sabars of Purulia

  • Photographer
    Nirmalya Bhattacharya, India

Sabars are nomadic forest living tribe of Eastern India. They are
landless and mostly live on hunting and as agricultural labour during
monsoon months. Extreme poverty, poor health and lack of basic
livelihood support for generations kept this tribe away from the main
social stream and some times they are tagged as criminal tribe also.
During 2010 report says 10 sabar people died because of starvation
which brought the issue into limelight and for a few months.
In this project, I have tried to explore the present condition of Sabar
tribes with special focus on Women and children. The Photographs
were taken at Purulia district of West Bengal, India during 2014-15.

Awards Received 65 International Awards so far for 75 International Salons of Photography under patronage of FIAP, PSA, UPI, RPS etc across 41 countries.
