About the Agriculture Series (ongoing)
Each field, grove or structure has, as the German lyricist Christian Morgenstern (1871–1914) said about
landscapes: “Every landscape has its own particular soul, just like any human you might meet.” This series
explores these souls and what happens to them.
A plowed field, visually lyrical, seemingly barren, from whose soul arises a crop or grove which in time is
harvested. Then sometimes plowed again. Machines, pipes, laborers. Mechanization and life. Over and over.
Straight lines of trees, grapes, vegetables, fruit. A mostly denuded, except perhaps for a few sentinels left
standing, plowed hill. Countless numbers of large leaves standing on the ground dancing in the wind.
American, born 1952, Torrance, CA. Lives and works, Petaluma, CA. Mostly self-taught. Working only with traditional transparency film or print film in 35mm and 645 formats. The finished photograph is the unmanipulated film image. Regularly exhibits work throughout the US and abroad. Reviewers and jurors have noted the work as suggestive of Hiroshi Sugimoto and color field painting.
