Ongoing photography series by Jakub Dvorak to illustrate books
about the Slovak history written by popular Slovak historian
Pavel Dvorak. Since 2002 the book series cover the past of
this central European nation. From ancient times when Vienna,
Budapest and Bratislava were bottom of the Tethys Ocean, till
the very recent history of this young country. The role of a
photographer is not just to depict the historical artefacts, that
are mentioned in the text, rather it is a consulting with the
writer and search for the visual challenges among the endless
possibilities of the rich Slovak cultural heritage, be it a gothic
catedral, Celtic coin, Roman cutlery, renaissance altar, vintage
woodcut of a battle in one of the many Turkish wars, or tooth of
a shark whose bygone territory is todays capital city of Slovakia.
From the very first moment the photographer tries to justify the
beauty of these objects with the beauty of artistic photography
approach.
