SS24: The Last Train

SS24 was the name of the last train that used to depart Singapore for Malaysia on any given day. In June 2011, the railway stopped running along the route it had run for the last 80 years. SS24: The Last Train is a photo project documenting the last months of the SS24 as it wound its way through the Singapore landscape.

Born and based in Singapore, Darren obtained an honours degree in Sociology from the National University of Singapore in 2001 while serving as a contract photographer at the country������¢??s leading English broadsheet newspaper The Straits Times.

Since 2001, Darren has been a full time independent photographer doing a mixture of editorial and commercial work. Some of his clients include Adidas, China Airlines, GulfAir, Nokia, Singapore Airlines, SilkAir, The Singapore Tourism Board, Starhub, Sony and VISA. His work brings him frequently around the different parts of Asia.

Darren is also a regular contributing photographer to Travel+Leisure South East Asia. In addition, his work has appeared in publications such as Conde Nast Traveler, Harper's Bazaar Singapore, Monocle, TIME Magazine, Travel+Leisure Australia, Travel+Leisure South Asia and Wallpaper* Magazine.

In 2004, Darren published his first monograph While You Were Sleeping, a collection of nocturnal landscapes from Singapore. Subsequently, Esplanade ������¢?? Theatres on the Bay presented the images from the book as an exhibition in the Esplanade Tunnel.

In 2006, Darren was invited by Singapore's Ministry of Information, Communications and The Arts (MICA) to contribute his work to Canvas, an anthology of photographic work from Singapore. Canvas was presented to delegates during the 2006 Annual Meetings of the Boards of Governors of the International Monetary Fund and World Bank Group held in Singapore.

In that same year, Darren was commissioned by The Supreme Court of Singapore to photograph Fosters and Partners������¢?? latest project in Singapore ������¢?? the new Supreme Court building. This commission was later published as a book entitled Hall of Justice.

Over the years, Darren has been placed in several international photography awards including the Commonwealth Photographic Awards,the Prix de la Photographie, Paris, the Photo District News Annual, the Photo District News World in Focus Contest and the International Photography Awards.

Most recently, Darren was listed by Photo District News (PDN) as one of PDN's 30 Emerging Photographers to watch in 2009.

Darren's photographic work is collected by the National Museum in Singapore and numerous corporate and private collectors from around the world.
