The golden headdress (â??Linzer Goldhaubeâ??) and the black perl headdress (â??Schwarze Perlhaubeâ??) as well as the black head cloth are traditional Upper Austrian hats. Usually worn on a daily basis by rich landladies beginning in the 17th century, today it is only worn on special occasions like catholic feasts by women organized in special unions.
As a young boy I always was impressed by the women when I saw them in the village where my grandmother was living. Later I forgot about their existence until I was reseaching for traditional costumes in Asia. Suddenly I remembered the impressive golden headdress. Interested in the look and the form of the hats and the costums, I was curious about the people who live the tradition.
This is a selection of portraits from the series.
