All portraits are taken of artists partaking in Beijing's underground music explosion in Club D22's backroom.

Matthew Niederhauser is a freelance photojournalist based in Beijing. He also fancies himself an adept writer with an eye for the absurd and will continue to work on his independent project Visions of Modernity. His work has appeared in the New Yorker, Washington Post, Time Magazine, Guardian Observer, PDN, South China Morning Post, Art Asia Pacific, China Cosmo and Timeout Beijing amongst others.
