with 72% of the children of Sierra Leone working, and the country being the 2nd poorest in the world, children are forced to work like slaves, some in slavery conditions at relatives' households. both boys and girls work in extremely physical labour such as breaking granite rocks, carrying charcoal, wood and water for miles. girls are also kept as sex slaves. children work from ages as young as 4-5. in the street it seems women and children do most of the work while the men seat in the background neatly dressed and clean. children in Sierra Leone "Pikin" in Creole seem to belong to a diffrerent race altogether, they receive no respect, face daily violence and are expected to provide for the famillies and pay their own food and "rent" even if they go to school and live with their famillies.
in Sierra Leone, every third child will die before reaching the age of 5.
