At the heart of Il Mare In Mezzo are the efforts of migrant mothers and their kids to make peace with the sea after surviving the deadly crossing of the Mediterranean. I juxtapose pictures of the mothers and kids at sea near Rome during initiatives aimed to help them overcome their trauma with pictures I took during many stints on rescue ships in action in the Central Med. The sea is central to the migration endeavour. It first stands between home and dream, then exile and return. To migrate, it must be engaged. To engage it requires great courage. Migration is the unsung Odyssey of our time
