The Forgotten Children of Bongao

Bongao is an island located southtern Philippines with various armed groups active in the region. For the 50th anniversary of the creation of Tawi-Tawi province late 2023, the Secretary of Tourism welcomed the efforts to maintain order and peace in the area, and highlighted the opportunities for development. But at the same time there is a drama there: the Bajau tribe (sea nomads) struggles to survive due to overfishing, pollution and climate change, the stunted children are forced to beg and perform small jobs. Stateless and without social rights, elderly people die in undignified conditions.
