In the heart of war-torn Syria, where relentless conflict shapes every facet of life, this portrait series captures the raw and multifaceted emotions of men on the frontline. Amid vulnerability, resilience, profound sorrow, intense fear and rare sparks of hope, these powerful images delve beyond the hardened exterior associated with soldiers. These images reveal the profound pressure to embody masculinity amidst the harrowing realities of death, fear, and desperation and bare witness to the silent struggles and unspoken truths that define the experience of men in combat.
I have worked as a multimedia journalist in Australia, the Middle East and Asia covering conflict, politics and human rights violations since 2005. My articles, photographs and videos have been published globally, receiving 18 international awards. I reported exclusively on Gaddafi’s capture and death in Libya which sparked a UN inquiry, broke news of the Yazidi crisis in Iraq as Islamic State attacked, killed and kidnapped them and gained wide acclaim for my photography in war-torn Syria.
