The Last Generation

The world needs farmers like never before, but in America, farms are disappearing fast – with more than four million lost since 1948. As industrialized megafarms ramp up efficiency to meet global demand, the economies of scale that fuel their growth are simultaneously hollowing out the rest of the industry – shaping America’s rural economies and ecosystems in their wake. As midsize producers creatively adapt to preserve land and legacy, farming children caught in this “disappearing middle” reimagine notions of a generational legacy, and their future.
