After the death of George Floyd, over 100 Confederate statues were removed in the South. During this time, Richmond, VA became one of the most largely protested cities in this monument debate owing to a 2-mile stretch of road known as Monument Avenue and home to five Confederate monuments. Some of the monuments stood over 20' tall and had been there for over 100 years. These statues soon became the sites for intense protests, and gathering places for demonstrators to rally. The monuments and pedestals became places for activists and protestors to use as canvases to express their anger.
