Unprecedented times demand an unprecedented response. As a film-based photographer, I’m compelled to make this new work by any means necessary.
These pictures are from the onset of the coronavirus and shelter-in-place. With no darkroom available, my outdated cell phone is now my camera of choice. I’ve added my own “archival” images as a backdrop to the current ones.
The pandemic has magnified the existing hardships and disparities found here, holding a mirror to neighborhood tensions spurred by gentrification.
I hope these pictures can express the anxiety, sadness and loss all of us face.
David Wolf is a devoted film photographer. The presence of memory in our lives and the power of beauty to redeem loss are at the heart of much of his work.
His photographs have been exhibited internationally by such venues as Aperture; Le Salon de la Photo, Paris; and photo basel, among many others.
David’s prints have been acquired by a variety of private and institutional collections, including the Bibliotheque nationale de France and the Sack Photographic Trust of SFMOMA.
His work has been published in “Harper’s,” “The Huffington Post,” “Lenscratch,” “FlakPhoto,” and “Fraction Magazine.”
