Making Buddha
Near the Mahamuni Temple in Mandalay, Myanmar there are streets where stonemasons toil away on statues of Buddha. The working conditions in there are truly atrocious, with little respect for the health of workers or the environment. Work is carried out without protective masks or dust extraction systems. It is upsetting to see workers, especially children, working in such conditions – their faces caked with a crust of choking dust. The result of breathing in these concentrations of dust will surely result in lung disease and other respiratory ailments – practically guaranteeing an early death.
