Entry Description

'I see moods as images'. In my mind my own moods are often represented by places or buildings where I have been. I have visualized this way of thinking through a series of photo collages. The work presents the merging or juxtaposition of an interior emotional world and that of the external in architecture and the landscape. The complexity of moods in the photo collages are expressed through the use of different layers of photographs, which were shot by me in different parts in the world. The collages represent themes such as animated desolation, rootedness, inevitability to our artificiality, serenity and (in)vulnerability. In the photo collages I want the complexity (and simplicity) of moods to present themselves. I want to leave it to the feeling of the viewer what they feel at a particular photo, what mood they see in a particular photo collage.

About Photographer

Cara Louwman (The Netherlands, 1967) is a contemporary fine art photographer specialized in creating images that tells a story. Inspired by her personal memories and influenced by different cultures, she uses photography as a mean to stage an idea and to present new perspectives on contemporary subjects. Her photographs are characterized by the use of multiple layers. Sometimes literally, like her staged still lifes in her studio. She creates images that are often different from a direct representation of reality.
