Entry Description

India has vast reserves of coal in West Bengal, Jharkhand, Odisha and other parts of the country and with increasing demand India wants to double the production by 2020. There are both open as well as underground pits but due to its high demand coal is now extracted mainly from the open coal mines. This has resulted in pollution as these mines emit intoxicating fumes, smoke and dust. Although the coal excavation works are done mechanically, the labourers of these mines are from the poorer sections of the society. They are continuously exposed to toxic fumes, dust and fatal accidents.
