The Way They Were, Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region 1986

  • Prize
    Silver in Special/Street Photography
  • Photographer
    Shinya Ichikawa

When I was poor student in 1986, I traveled China on surface from Kobe, Japan to Kashgar, west end of China for two months. The people in these photos were very happy even they seemed poor. China has changed dramatically in these thirty years. I show here you photos I took in Xinjian Uygur Autonomous Region. In the photos people kept their own cultures and traditional lifestyles. I hope they lead happy life until today with their family and friends keeping their own identity.

Shinya Ichiawa is a fine art photographer who specializes in black and white silver gelatin print on fiber base paper. From film development to print finishing with archival quality, all of the processes are done by the artist. He pursues fine printings in a darkroom to realize sculptures by lights on photographic paper.
