The Free Syrian Army

The Free Syrian Army is an armed resistance group opposed to Syria's President, Bashar al-Assad's brutal crackdown on peaceful protesters. Their role is to work with demonstrators to bring down the system.
The Syrian region of Jabal al-Zawiya, in the northwestern province of Idlib has, in the past, been considered a safe-zone for army deserters. The group has spread across its mountainous landscape and adopted guerrilla-style tactics. But in December 2011, the military besieged the area hunting down and killing some 200 army deserters and civilians in what activists say was one of the deadliest massacres of the uprising.
