Residents living in cobbled together shacks in slums in India lack all basic services such as running water and electricity. Residents in this Lucknow slum support themselves by picking up and sorting trash and selling recyclable items. Through a non-profit organization, Pollinate Energy, they have been able to purchase solar powered lanterns that enable them to extend work hours and help with chores such as cooking after dark. Today in India, more than 17% of all proper homes still need to be electrified and many homes that are connected to the electricity grid lack reliable electricity.
