This images are taken from a larger series that was created in
Kalongo, Northern Uganda at Kalongo Hospital and St. Mary’s
Midwifery School. The purpose of the project was to bring to
light the importance of midwives in areas such as Sub Saharan
Africa where medical care might be scarce.
Uganda has a particularly high rate of maternal mortality
especially in the Northern Region which has remained isolated
even after the civil war ended. The midwives of St. Mary’s School
study basic nursing as well as midwifery during their 3 year
training and often are hired to work in remote health centres
where they are the best trained medical staff.
St. Mary’s has a long tradition of forming midwives but also
empowering women to go out into the communities and use
their knowledge to teach others. The motto they live by is To
Serve with Love and Joy.
