In the heart of the Agbogbloshie ghetto in Accra, Charles, orphaned since childhood, finds in boxing an opportunity for redemption: he becomes captain of the national team and wins medals. In 2012, he returned to the neighbourhood where he grew up and founded the Charles Quartey Boxing Foundation to offer young people what he lacked: hope, discipline, a way out. He teaches them how to fight, in the ring and in life, sometimes providing some with a basic education. He finances the Foundation himself with the occasional help from a few others. I pictured him with his boys, in a carefree moment.
