For most women, motherhood is a joy - most of the time.
But many also experience disappointment, guilt, even anger and fear. Becoming a mum is hard - everybody knows that. But usually we only hear about sleepless nights, not the profound identity shift that accompanies becoming a mother.
Motherhood is a psychological big bang. And yet it’s rare to find emotionally honest conversations about it.
“I didn’t want to be a mum” by Sophie Ebrard launched during Unseen in Amsterdam (2029), is an immersive exhibition exploring the ambivalent feelings of motherhood.
Sophie Ebrard is a worldwide acclaimed and exhibited photographer and director based in Amsterdam.
Ebrard's images are drenched with natural light, intimacy and beauty. Filled with movement and energy, each still contains a story, a personal tale. She invites the viewer to take a glimpse into worlds that are out-of-bounds. Her photographs are real and shots are cinematic.
Her work has been exhibited and published worldwide including at the National Portrait Gallery in London and in outlets such as Vanity Fair, Vogue, Time, The Guardian, Dazed….
