    Demetris Vattis, Cyprus

During World War II there was a mass participation of Cypriots with the British army as Cyprus was under British rule. Youngsters from all over Cyprus who until then had not even left their village found themselves in war fronts in Europe, Egypt, Sudan. For some, the motive was ideological. For others it was a matter of survival. The response to the calling for participating in the fight against fascism from all four communities of the island-Greek,Turkish,Armenian,Maronite- was unprecedented. This project is a tribute to them , photographed in their homes and their everyday surroundings.
