Lefteris Pitarakis was born in Athens, Greece. He is a photojournalist with The Associated Press since 1998. He worked in the Balkans with multiple assignments to Macedonia, Montenegro and Kosovo, during and after the NATO war. In 2000 and for 5 years he was posted in the Middle East for the Associated Press covering and editing mainly the Palestinian uprising against Israel in the West Bank and the Gaza Strip. He traveled in the greater Middle East region to Egypt, Lebanon, Syria and Jordan, had numerous trips to Pakistan and covered the aftermath of the US-led wars in Afghanistan and Iraq. From 2005 he is based in London. He covered the summer 2006 Lebanon war between Israel and Hezbollah and that body of work from the conflict along with the rest of the AP photo team that covered it, made them finalists for the 2006 Pulitzer Prize.
